Team GB Activity

Don’t worry – we won’t be making you get in any water for this swimming activity!

Swimming arm strokes

In the Olympics, there are 16 different swimming events using 4 different types of strokes.

Your challenge is to mimic these four strokes:

  • Freestyle
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly
  • Backstroke

Let’s begin!

Freestyle

  • Start with both of your arms straight out in front of you.
  • Pull one arm backwards then over your head and back to the start position.
  • Once your first arm gets back to the start position, start using the next arm.

Breaststroke

  • Start with both arms together in front of your chest.
  • Push both arms straight forwards in front of you, keeping your hands together.
  • Then, turn your hands so your palms face away from each other.
  • Pull both arms to the side and return to the start position.

Butterfly

  • Start with both of your arms straight out in front of you.
  • Bend your elbows as your push both arms back behind you.
  • Then bring both arms over the top of your head and straighten them as you return back to the start position.

Backstroke

  • Start with both arms straight above your head.
  • Move one arm backwards in a circle.
  • Once your first arm gets back to the start position, start using the next arm.

Practise the strokes while pretending to swim away from the shark statue! Get one person to call out the type of stroke for everyone to do.

This activity was suggested by students from Stepney Primary School and Withernsea Primary School.
