Walking isn’t as easy as it looks!

Race walking

Did you know that race walking is an athletics event at the Olympic Games?

Athletes have to walk as fast as possible making sure at least 1 foot is on the ground at all times!

The front leg also has to stay straight until the whole body has passed over it.

If the athlete gets 3 strikes, they get disqualified!

Let’s begin!

Your turn!

  • Watch this video to see how the professionals do it!
  • See how quickly you can walk the lane using the correct technique.
  • Make sure to keep 1 foot on the grounds at all times!

Fun fact

  • The lane is 177m, but in the Olympics, the short event is 20,000m and the long event is 50,000m.
  • That means you would have to walk the lane 113 times in the short event or 283 times for the long event!

Get someone in your group to be the judge and hand out strikes if both feet leave the floor at the same time!

Have a go at your own honey bee waggle dance!
Find a point that will be your flower.
Now walk in a straight line to your flower while waggling your body side to side.
When you get to the flower, show your best dance move, then turn either left or right and loop back to your starting point (making sure to waggle your body at the same time!).
